Eduardo Ibanez-Sanchez, 34, was behind the wheel of a 2012 Volkswagen Golf that rear-ended a 2020 Kia Forte on eastbound Harding Highway (Route 40) shortly before 7 a.m. Tuesday, Atlantic County Prosecutor Damon G. Tyner said.
The impact projected the Kia into the oncoming lane, where a 2012 International truck struck it on the passenger side, Tyner said.
The Kia driver, Little Jeffrey Grier of Mays Landing, was pronounced dead at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, the prosecutor said.
Grier, 56, was a longtime and current support employee of the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Authorities charged Ibanez-Sanchez with being involved in a fatal motor vehicle with a suspended driver’s license and driving with a license suspended because of a DWI violation, Tyner said.
The truck driver, Amed Feliciano, 51, of Hammonton wasn't injured, he added.
“We were incredibly saddened to learn of the passing of our friend and colleague," Tyner said. "We join Jeff’s family and friends in the mourning of his loss.
"Jeff was undoubtedly one of the kindest, most selfless people I have ever encountered," the prosecutor added. "While members of our agency are trained to respond to tragic events in the normal course of their duties, it is never 'normal' when you respond to an incident where a colleague or family member has sustained fatal injuries."
The Cape May County Prosecutor’s Office was asked to help with the investigation and for making decisions about charges due to Grier’s employment with his office, Tyner said.
